Dispatch Photographer Takes Second Place

Gilroy – Dispatch Chief Photographer, Chris Riley, received the second place award in the Sports Action category of the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association annual competition.

The award winning photograph that ran in the Morgan Hill Times is of a Live Oak High School soccer game against Palma High School. Riley has worked at the Dispatch for six years and became chief photographer last year.

Audition for ‘The Music Man’ This Weekend

Gilroy – South Valley Civic Theatre is holding auditions for the family musical, “The Music Man.” 

Characters range from ages 8 years to adult. All roles are open. They also are looking for Barbershop Quartets and pit musicians. Auditions will be held at the SVCT warehouse, behind Kelly-Moore Paint, 8565 Monterey Road. They are: 7pm Friday, check in at 6:30pm; 10am Saturday, check in at 9:30am; and 2pm Saturday, check in at 1:30pm, or by appointment.

Please come prepared to sing a song of your choosing, piano accompanist will be provided. Wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to learn a small dance routine. You will be asked to perform a cold reading from the script.

Performance dates are June 29, 30, July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21

Free Film Series for Adults Continues Wednesdays

Gilroy – Adults ages 55 and up can participate in a free class/film series through the Gavilan College Department of Noncredit Instruction. Humanities 767, “Film Classics” is designed to study the facts, fantasy, history and trivia of classic and modern films. The background and history of each film and its performance will be compared and contrasted. This class is “open entry” meaning that participants do not have to attend all class sessions.

Instructor Grant Richards is a graduate of Gilroy High School and Gavilan College and teaches film history and film production at Gavilan College.

Films will be screened at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 5pm, through June 6. Students may register in class, or call in advance to 848-4859.

Get Spring Fever, Picture With Easter Bunny

Gilroy – The Little Gym invites the public to celebrate spring at the Spring Fling Open House 12:30 to 2:30pm April 1. The Easter Bunny will be posing for pictures with children and a fun egg hunt for members will be held as well as snacks and a fun spring craft.

Youth Leadership Conference Saturday

Gilroy – The Second Annual Cesar E. Chavez Youth Leadership Conference will take place at Gavilan College 11am to 7pm Saturday in the Student Center and Social Science buildings. Workshops on indigenous culture, leadership, nonviolence, sexual health education, domestic violence, and gang/alcohol prevention will be given, and keynote speaker Cesar Cruz will also be present. Admission is free and lunch and dinner will be provided.

Chamber Singers Perform Before Leaving for Japan

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Chamber Singers Sayonara Concert will be held at 7:30pm April 2, at the South Valley National Bank, 8800 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Admission is free as a “thank you” to Gilroy for all of its support to the Chamber

Singers, who will leave for their Japan Concert Tour April 4. This concert is a preview of the concert that will be performed in Japan.

Drive For a Cure: Golf Tournament Fundraiser

Gilroy – Perfect your putting and support cancer research, in the same swing. Saturday, April 14 at the Gilroy Golf Course, participants can compete for a cause. Proceeds from the scramble-format tournament support the American Cancer Society.

The $90 fee includes golfing, a cart, lunch, dinner, on-course refreshments, a T-shirt, prizes, awards, a raffle and other contests. The deadline to sign up is April 2.
