Do we really need a super Wal-Mart?

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer is trying to relocate to a new Super Wal-Mart on Camino Arroyo (as if we need more traffic on that overpass) with promises of more taxes for the city (yeah right, groceries don’t have taxes). What Wal-Mart should do is provide good jobs with living wages and affordable health benefits, so we the taxpayers don’t have the burden of paying for their medical and living expenses through state and county assistance programs.

By allowing them to relocate they jeopardize the little guy that is trying to make a living. The two close grocery stores, Arteagas and P.W. Market, cannot survive just like what had happened to downtown Gilroy retailers. They also would have to close down. Gilroy was built with union enthusiasm (i.e. Gilroy Cannery, Gilroy Foods, Gentry’s, Gilroy Unified School District, Nob Hill, Safeway, Gaylord Container, Carpenter and Plumber Unions). Wal-mart is not good business. America’s store is not living up to America’s values. Wal-Mart employees deserve much better. I urge you to call your planning commissioner and voice your opinion.
