Dog-dragging case clear: owner should never be near animals

Dear Editor,

I grew up in Gilroy and lived in Morgan Hill for several years. I now live in San Jose and as a concerned citizen, I travel to Morgan Hill to attend court dates involving the Kevin Fifield dog dragging case.

The idea that Kevin Fifield should be reunited with Snowflake is outrageous. Several witnesses, including Morgan Hill police officers, saw Fifield drag the elderly, very sick dog down the sidewalk on her side. This man should not be allowed to be around any animal ever again.

The suggestion by anyone that lifting the “stay-away” order is for the sake of Snowflake is an insult to the intelligence of the community, law enforcement and the officers of the court. If Mr. Fifield does not want to stay in a hotel, let him go back to jail.

Plenty of evidence to support God’s existence, just consider our reality

Dear Editor,

Marc Perkel writes in a Sept. 7th letter, that there is no evidence for God’s existence.

Not so!! Evidence of intelligent design is everywhere. At the university, I majored in geology and physics. The rule was that matter and energy were the sole elements of the earth. One could not create matter, nor could one create energy. However, one could change energy into matter, or change matter into energy.

A good example is to burn a log in a fire (that’s matter) and create energy – the radiant heat from the fire.

To create matter from energy is more complicated. All energy comes from the sun. All green leaves on plants have the ability of photosynthesis. There is in the leaf a molecule called chlorophyll that has the ability, using energy from the sun, to combine nitrogen from the soil with water and carbon dioxide from the air to create a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are the building blocks of all vegetation.

How does the molecule chlorophyll know just how much nitrogen to blend with the carbon dioxide to make the carbohydrate?

The guide to that ability of the molecule to correctly combine the elements is know as “information.”

Science now recognizes that there is not only matter and energy, but also information necessary on this earth for life. Information is not created through evolution. It is a force guiding the chemical reactions of photosynthesis – the basis of all our food.

Science recognizes the force for development and the order but dare not call that force the God of Israel.

There is, in addition to photosynthesis, many other examples of “information” in nature. The monarch butterfly flies thousands of miles in an accurate course to its birthplace – a flight never flown before. How is it guided? It has the information in its brain, but who put it there? I quote from the Bible from Romans, chapter 1, verse 20: “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.”

Lastly, I would quote King Solomon from the book of Ecclesiastes: “Only a fool says in his heart that there is no God.”

Bicycle riding really a challenge on the dirty streets of Gilroy

Dear Editor,

I frequently ride my bicycle around Gilroy while doing errands and would like to add to your debris letters. There is always debris on Welburn/Leavesley Road between Church Street all the way to the outlets, as well as on Arroyo Circle from the outlets to Gilman/Sixth Street.

In fact I just got a three-inch nail in my rear tire while riding past Kaiser Permanente on Arroyo Circle. I would say bicycle riding in Gilroy is quite challenging, from getting the motorists to see you when crossing intersections, to dodging low-hanging tree limbs, especially on the north side of Mantelli from Poplar to Calle Del Rey.

In fact most of the trees on Mantelli Drive between Church all the way up to Calle del Rey could stand a trim job.

On another subject, I was wondering if you can find out if Church Street between Welburn and Mantelli will be repaved in the near future, as it is due for one.

Enjoyed a great, reasonably priced steak at Station 55 downtown

Dear Editor,

Recently, I had the best rib-eye steak that I have ever eaten. It was large and cooked perfectly – tender and delicious. You could almost cut it with a fork. The restaurant, Station 55, was in downtown Gilroy and the service was excellent.

The place was busy but there were less than 55 people there. The prices were right and my steak would have kept any fireman happy. It was pleasant to have had an excellent meal in one of our small non-chain eateries. Keep it in mind for your next night out.
