Dear Editor,
An ancient philosopher said: “You don’t need a university, you just need a library.”
What was true then, is true now. Not so long ago each home had its own library, either the encyclopedia or something like it. Hundreds of folks made a living selling them door to door. You needed to know something, you looked it up.
Now there are so many new things that haven’t found their way into the encyclopedias, you have to look them up on the Internet – if you have a computer.
Every which way you turn, you’re always referred to the Internet. On the radio, Television, in the newspaper ads or articles you always end up against the www… But does everyone have a computer and know how to navigate the Internet?
Libraries are an enormous storehouse of knowledge. With access to the Internet other dimensions have been added to the availability of information. Of course, you can do it at home and many do, but the library has a knowledgeable staff for those of us who tend to get lost in the www forest.
There is a constant stream of new books coming off the presses to challenge our minds. To buy them becomes prohibitive. Borrowing them from the library is the no-cost alternative. No credit card needed, just a library card. If the book isn’t available, they’ll borrow it for you from another library usually for three weeks – time enough even for slow readers. With the same card you can borrow children’s books, large print books, books on tape, movies, DVDs and your favorite CDs.
So we propose to save money by keeping the library closed for additional days or hours. It will just sit there, a valuable asset – unused. It’s like keeping your car in the garage. It’ll depreciate just the same and it won’t get you any place.
Don’t force this valuable asset to sit idle. Vote YES on A and B.
