Dear Editor:
There is a time and a place for most everything. The area called “Downtown Gilroy” is a commercial entity made up of businessmen and women struggling to put a good face on the area and offer people a pleasant place to shop, enjoy good food, relax over a cup of coffee, partake of their favorite libation or casually stroll along the few blocks that make up “downtown”.
None can argue that help for those unfortunate individuals caught in the grip of drug and alcohol addiction is not a worthy cause whether it be through the help of volunteers or the use of a business entity engaged in such work. An argument can be made, however, as to the placement of those offices or clinics that offer such aid and treatment. Situating such facilities in the heart of “downtown” appears to fly in the face of everything that suggests that the area should offer a comfortable, safe, relaxing commercial atmosphere to be enjoyed.
The rebuilding and expansion of “Downtown Gilroy” as a viable commercial center is not going to take place by placing facilities in the heart of the area that have nothing to do with mercantile offerings; that will undoubtedly cause additional parking problems; and, in the minds of many, raise the question of safety.
Most, if not all, business owners downtown are adamant in their opposition to the location of a drug and alcohol treatment facility in the immediate “downtown” area. A permit for the operation of such a facility should be denied.
