Drunk driving arrests are down so far this holiday season compared to last year, police said.

Over the weekend, Gilroy police arrested five people and Morgan Hill police arrested 17 people for driving under the influence. Since the “Avoid the 13” campaign began on Dec. 12, 370 individuals have been arrested countywide for driving under the influence, including 12 in Gilroy and 36 in Morgan Hill.

Last year, 417 drunk driving arrests were made in the same time period and one person was killed in an alcohol-related crash. The effort netted 859 total DUI arrests during the 19-day holiday campaign, which ends on New Year’s Day.

“The numbers are down,” said Sgt. Jerry Neumayer of the Morgan Hill Police Department. “Hopefully people are getting the message.”

Though no DUI checkpoints are planned for Gilroy or Morgan Hill, checkpoints are scheduled for Los Altos, San Jose, Milpitas and Sunnyvale.
