GILROY – A pedestrian was killed in Gilroy early Saturday morning when he was struck by a drunk driver near 10th and Hanna streets.
The driver of the vehicle was Bradly Graham Whalen, 37, who was arrested for felony driving under the influence of alcohol after his 1996 Chevrolet Silverado pickup collided with the man in his early 20s at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday, according to police.
The victim’s name is not being released because the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office has not been able to notify his family.
“(The victim) was actually hit by two cars,” said Gilroy Police Department Capt. Debbie Moore. “After Whalen’s truck hit him another car trailing (Whalen) ran him over too.”
The victim was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident when paramedics and police arrived, Moore said.
Toxicology tests revealing if the victim had any alcohol or drugs in his system will take to six to eight weeks to complete, according to the coroner’s office.
Whalen, who lives in the 7000 block of Mount Vernon Way, was arrested immediately following the accident and transported to county jail in San Jose with a $20,000 bail. Results of his blood-alcohol test were not available, and Moore would not comment on any further charges that might be filed against Whalen.
The driver of the second vehicle was not charged with any crime, Moore said.
