Pressure defense and Rowena Tabilas’ finest performance of the season were the keys Thursday as Gilroy ran away in the second half from host Alvarez 55-23 in a Tri-County Athletic League encounter.
The Mustangs’ fullcourt man-to-man press was so effective in the second half that the Eagles scored just eight points.
“Not only did Ro have her best scoring game of the season (eight points), but she played stellar defense on their top scorer (Chelsea Von Winning),” GHS coach James Wilkins. “She was definitely our player of the game. And Amanda Spellman came up real big defensively as well.”
A 17-2 third quarter broke it open for the Mustangs (16-5 overall, 7-3 TCAL). Angela Silveira had 11 of her game-high 12 points in the quarter which turned a 25-15 halftime advantage into a 42-17 blowout. Silveira also had six rebounds and three assists.
Vanessa Wilkins had 11 points and seven steals. Dana Schoeneman had nine points, six rebounds and six steals. Russhelle Preeshl handed out five assists. Tabilas held Von Winning, the Eagles’ leading scorer, to four points.
“Now comes the big one,” said James Wilkins, pointing to Tuesday’s home finale against Salinas that will likely determine second place in the TCAL.
