Mustang diamondmen drop two one-run games
SAN JOSE – The Gilroy High baseball team dropped back-to-back one-run games while on the road over the weekend.
First, Terra Nova pitcher Greg Reynolds fanned 13 batters to keep the Mustang diamondmen in check and hand the locals a tight 4-3 loss at P.A.L. Stadium in San Jose.
Reynolds, however, got into trouble in the fifth inning – walking the bases loaded and then senior John Kirkish worked a base-on-balls to force in a Gilroy run.
Sophomore Peter Mickartz started the game but pitched only three innings – because he was limited by tournament rules.
On Saturday, the Mustangs were short-changed again – falling to Hillsdale by a 4-3 spread.
Senior Marty Sustained singled, Kirkish went 2-for-3 with a double, and senior Eric Gonzalez finished 1-for-2 with a RBI and a walk. In addition, seniors Richard Chavez and Ron Colmon (RBI) as well as sophomore shortstop Jordan Newton all had base knocks.
The Mustangs will play Leland two more times on April 22 at Leland High and April 24 at Gilroy High before returning to league action April 30 against Salinas.
