State budget revisions show promise for Calif. schools
New resources for California schools, according to Governor Jerry Brown’s May Revision of the 2013-14 state budget, has State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson envisioning a stronger future for today’s youth.
“As a teacher, it’s heartening to finally see new resources directed to California’s schools after so many years of painful cuts,” said Torlakson of Governor Brown’s state budget revisions. “Californians want our schools back on solid financial ground, and Governor Brown’s proposal represents another important step in the right direction.”
Torlakson cited the importance of new funds to help schools “prepare, train, and equip themselves to fully implement the Common Core State Standards.”
“These funds will help California’s schools prepare children for the challenges of a constantly changing world, and graduate armed with real-world skills they need to thrive in college and a career,” Torlakson added.
After nearly $1 billion in cuts to education in recent years, Torlakson believes the revised state budget with more funds back into schools will make a major impact to students. The state superintendent called for Californians to “commit ourselves to rebuilding California’s early learning system.”

Green returns to seat on County Board of Education
The Santa Clara County Board of Education unanimously agreed Wednesday to provisionally appoint Darcie Green as Board Trustee of Area 6, a spot she had voluntarily resigned from March 19 after concerns were raised as to whether her residence lay within the original or revised boundaries of the trustee area.
Green, who formerly served on the Board of Trustees for the Alum Rock Union School District, was originally selected in October 2012 to fill a vacant spot by the County Board of Education. The seat had been vacant since August. However, Green resigned when question arose over her residence.
She since has moved, and her present residence is within the required boundary. Her provisional appointment for Trustee Area 6 lasts up to November 2014.
Board meetings are regularly scheduled on the first and third Wednesday of each month in the San Jose Room of the Santa Clara County Office of Education, 1290 Ridder Park Drive in San Jose.
In other news, Philip J. Gordilla was named the Executive Director of Human Resources for the County Office of Education. Gordilla had been in the same position on a non-permanent basis since July 1, 2010. His duties include “overseeing certificated and classified personnel, employment services, employee benefits, credentialing, unemployment insurance, work-place compliance, and workforce and organization development,” according to the May 9 release.
