Dear Editor,

My daughter is going to school to become a registered nurse, but on the way she took a course in a specialty school to become a medical assistant. She completed her specialty school as well as her internship in November 2005, so why am I writing to the newspaper?

My daughter cannot find a job because she speaks “ENGLISH” YES, you heard me right! My daughter has sent out several resumes and has been through several interviews where she has been told she is highly qualified and that they like her personality very much, BUT … she only speaks “ENGLISH”. I am so upset and ashamed of what we have become. If anyone can give me an answer – an intelligent answer – please do so! Should I encourage my daughter to quit school and work the system? Why should we need to learn any other language other than our own when we live in the UNITED STATES?

In the old days when people came to our country they learned English because they HAD too. Sad for me to say, but now I guess we MUST learn theirs! Oh, one more small thing I would like to add. Both of my sister’s married Hispanic men 45 years ago. They learned English as well as their children and their children’s children. I love my family. END OF STORY! A disgusted mom,
