SAN JOSE—Gilroy went toe-to-toe with a team that is accustomed to blowing schools out but ultimately, couldn’t pulloff the upset.
Los Gatos scored what proved to be the game winner in the sixth minute Saturday at Del Mar and constantly kept pressure in the Mustang zone to come away with a 2-0 win.
The Mustangs finish the season 12-5-2 overall and a 6-1 Monterey Bay League mark.
Keeper Savannah stood on her head for most of the game as the Wildcats kept getting bodies into the circle and putting pressure on the young goalie.
“I love our freshman goalie. She did really well,” said coach Adam Gemar.
In the second half alone, she turned away five shots on goal and kept her composure under the pressure.
Meanwhile, the Gilroy offense made brief pushes into the Los Gatos zone, but every time the attacks were snuffed out before they could begin.
By late in the second half, Los Gatos held a monopoly on the time of possession.
The Wildcats finally put the game on ice with a 56th-minute goal by Sara Deck for the final margin.
Still, Gilroy can hold its head as the team that played Los Gatos the closest all season, holding the Cats to their fewest goals and smallest margin of victory.
“They played their heart out all season long. Love those guys they’re the heart of the team. Bringing it every day never missing a day,” Gemar said.
