Apparently, the Gilroy High field hockey team just needed to warm up.
After beginning Mount Hamilton Division play winless in their first three games – one loss, two ties – the Mustangs have caught fire of late, picking up key victories in their last two outings.
One game after knocking off defending league champ Los Gatos, the Mustangs hit the road once more to take on Saint Francis on Wednesday night.
Monica Marrazzo broke a 1-1 tie with three minutes to play in the seven-minute extra session to lift the Mustangs past the Lancers, who were previously unbeaten, 2-1 in Mountain View.
“That’s the way a hockey game is supposed to be played – on both sides,” GHS head coach Adam Gemar said. “The girls came out ready. This one will give them the confidence they needed.”
Marrazzo stick-handled the ball into the circle, sent a pass to herself and finished the play with a nifty weak-side sweep shot. The goal may have been an individual effort, but Gemar said it was a complete team win.
“Every player contributed to that one,” Gemar said.
The veteran coach said he had some concerns with the Lancers’ speed at the forward position and made sure that was a point of emphasis with his defenders heading into the contest.
“The defense stepped up,” he said.
Katrina Carter posted the Mustangs’ first goal of the night, knotting matters 1-1 late in the first half.
The vaunted Mount Hamilton Division schedule ceases to relent as GHS (2-1-2) travels to San Jose to challenge Presentation on Friday. The game marks Gilroy’s sixth consecutive league road tilt.
