A stream of 4,000 to 4,500 people swirled around Monterey and Fifth streets Saturday under clear skies for the Art and Wine Festival’s first year downtown.
“It was the first time the downtown and the city had really done an event together,” said Steve Ashford, co-director of the Downtown Business Association who recalled the “constant” lines outside the winery booths and the great music in the background along with the smell of barbecue.
Community Services Director Susan Andrade-Wax told Ashford she had a ball and wanted to see the event grow, he said.
“If you’ve ever tried to roll a stroller across the grass at Christmas Hill Park, you know it’s not easy,” Ashford said in reference to the festival’s old location and the reassuringly high turn-out of family’s last weekend.
