Gilroy – A structural fire at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School early Tuesday morning was the last of a number of incidents the Gilroy Fire Department responded to during of the Fourth of July weekend.

“It was an interesting day. It was slow in the morning, but it picked up later in the day,” Gilroy Fire Department Captain Shaun Peyghambary said, adding that the department received 12 calls Monday.

The 4:22am fire started in one portable classroom building due to an electrical problem, and spread to the wall of an adjacent portable building six inches away, Peyghambary said.

Officials said none of the incidents appeared to be firework-related, but added they were still under investigation.

Firefighters also responded to a kitchen fire at 8800 Lily Ave. at 6:42pm Monday. Peyghambary said a male occupant suffered smoke inhalation and it was fortunate fire officials arrived when they did.

There were also two other small fires, Peyghambary said. One was a trash can fire reported at about 5:30pm Monday that was extinguished at Engle Way and Luchessa Avenue.

The second fire occurred in a field before 6:30pm Monday, near Rosso’s Furniture and Hobby World on Monterey Road. Peyghambary said about 15,000 square feet of vegetation burned before firefighters extinguished it.

Fire officials also responded to a car fire at 6:15pm the same day in front of the Polo Store at the Gilroy Outlets, and said the fire was extinguished without incident.

Although the call volume increased at the Gilroy Police Department, Sgt. Kurt Svardal said nothing out of the ordinary happened during the holiday weekend.

“It was very quiet. We mostly received normal calls for service,” Svardal said.

On Saturday, Svardal said police received 27 firework complaints and 12 on Sunday.
