Fireworks

Morgan Hill’s annual Independence Day fireworks display will continue as planned at the Community Park July 4, according to the holiday event organizers.

The all-volunteer Independence Day Celebrations organization tried to move the display to Sobrato High School for this year’s festivities in order to accommodate bigger fireworks, more parking and bigger crowds, but they were unable to overcome the “logistic hurdles” to moving, IDC president Charles Weston said.

So the fireworks will remain at Community Park, where the annual Independence Day display has been for about 15 years.

The annual Morgan Hill Independence Day festivities have typically attracted thousands of visitors to town. The event includes one of the largest fireworks displays in the county, and one of the largest and longest-running parades in the county.

The parade, which is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., will take place in downtown Morgan Hill. A 5K run will take place before the parade, Weston said.

The volunteers are also considering moving the annual July 3 “street dance” from downtown streets to the Community and Cultural Center.

Permits and applications for that site are on file with the city, and IDC has not heard yet if the site has been approved, Weston said.

That event will feature live music and family entertainment if the move is approved.

The reason for the proposed change of venue is to keep the concert a more family-friendly event, and to cut down on costs to run the IDC festivities, Weston said last month.  It costs about $140,000 to conduct the week-long extravaganza which includes a 5K run, car show, pre-fireworks entertainment and the downtown parade.

New to this year’s festivities are a 100K bicycle ride. The annual golf tournament fundraiser will be eliminated this year, due to diminishing participation in recent years.
