Gilroy – A six-car crash tied up southbound U.S. 101 through Gilroy for nearly two hours Tuesday, as emergency crews blocked off the highway to let a helicopter whisk a Gilroy woman to Regional Medical Center of San Jose.

A 40-year-old Gilroy woman driving a Mercedes-Benz was slowing to a stop at 11am Tuesday on southbound U.S. 101, due to Caltrans work on the highway, when a big-rig driven by a 54-year-old Richmond man smashed into her car from behind, then skidded into a Mitsubishi van driven by an 53-year-old man from Elk Grove. The Mitsubishi careened left into the fast lane, hitting a GMC driven by a 42-year-old Hollister woman, a Toyota Camry driven by a 37-year-old woman from Salinas, and a Dodge pickup truck driven by a 59-year-old man from Santa Barbara.

The Gilroy woman suffered head injuries and was flown to Regional Medical Center. The Elk Grove man and Hollister woman suffered minor injuries; he was rushed to Regional Medical Center by ambulance, and the woman went to Saint Louise Regional Hospital.

No arrests were made in connection with the crash, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. The names of the injured parties were unavailable by press time Tuesday.

Gilroy police, firefighters and CHP diverted traffic from three lanes of southbound U.S. 101 onto the Monterey Road exit, clogging the highway as far north as Leavesley Road. The accident was cleared within two hours.
