Area soccer club hangs tough in heat but falls 3-0 to Mountain
View
DE ANZA – On Saturday’s very hot afternoon, the De Anza Flash lost 3-0 to a fit, strong team from Mountain View. It was a classic battle between ball-control and direct attack. Mountain View continually played the ball past its midfield from fullbacks to sprinting wingers, while the Flash controlled the ball with short passes from the back, through the midfield to strikers.
The game was fairly even for the first 60 minutes. Kelly Logan and Alison Wan played well linking the back to front. Cayla Derry, who ran especially hard all game, repeatedly received balls to her feet as she ran inside-out, then attempted to cut into the penalty area. Brittany Barnes was knocked down twice as she attempted to split the defense. But, MV’s backs were big, fast and strong. The Flash couldn’t get enough good chances to put one away.
On the other end, Melanie Regan played steady and made some strong saves. Once Regan was beaten and Shelly Pund, in great balance position, was able to knock the MV shot off the goal-line and out of bounds.
Then the Flash completely ran out of gas. For the last 20 minutes, MV was able to drive the ball down the wings and cross. The result was three goals.
The Flash play Mountain View again, in their last league game of the season on November 15.
