Gilroy continued to dominate the league with virtually flawless passing en route to a perfect league season and TCAL title.
Amanda and Laura Spellman each scored a goal in Friday’s 2-0 win against Salinas.
Amanda Spellman’s goal was a crisp, powerful shot into the far left corner of the cage assisted by Elise Ogle. Laura Spellman scored on a well executed weakside sweep in the first half of the game.
Dani Hemeon was selected player of the game by goalie Gerayln Moon, who commented after the game on Hemeon’s consistency in passing and stick-handling skills in the middle of the field.
The win keeps Gilroy undefeated in league and gives them the TCAL championship for the fifth year in a row. The Mustangs scored 70 goals, more than any other team in the Central Coast Section.
“We were proud of the girls for their ball movement,” said Mustang Coach Erin Gemar. “They played both sides of the field, distributing the ball to both left and right side fairly equally. Although we won, we still have much work to do to perfect our ball control and vision. Communication was better today; however, it’s a skill that’s hard to teach and it’s something we work on constantly. Communication on the field just makes everybody better. If vision is bad, communication will help. Communication helps picks up play and diminishes the flaws players have.”
JV NOTE: The Gilroy JV team won 2-0.
