A fast start, and not by its opponent, is paramount for the GHS football team, traveling to take on Everett Alvarez tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The matchup is the Eagles Tri-County Athletic League opener.
The Mustangs have been outscored 75-35 in the first half of their four games, a trend that doesn’t bode well for a team that has yet to demonstrate the ability to come from behind. Conversely, the Eagles have posted 66 first-half points through their four games while holding opponents to 37.
Gilroy’s offense is tough to define. Look for a steady dose of gut-busting run plays featuring senior Eric Vegas, whose 103 yards last week against North Salinas was a season high for GHS. The Mustangs will continue to establish themselves as a legitimate ground attack. A big play or two through the air is likely as well.
— Alvarez is 0-24 in TCAL games heading into tonight’s contest. But an improved offense leads the way this season.
— Julius Travis (24), Ryan Alba, (11) and Thomas Harrington (10) are one, two, three in receptions in the TCAL. Travis has 269 yards to pace the league. Alvarez’s Deandre Sheppard is second with 257 yards.
