GILROY – Five turnovers, including three in the second half, doomed Christopher High in a 27-7 loss to Monterey Bay League opponent Monte Vista Christian on Saturday in Gilroy.
“The turning points in the game were the mistakes that we made,” CHS head coach Tim Pierleoni said. “We made far, far too many mistakes. We have to limit those mistakes. Every time we turned the ball over it hurt us.”
The Cougars (2-4, 1-2 MBL) trailed just 7-0 at halftime, matching the undefeated Mustangs’ (6-0, 2-0 MBL) physicality hit for hit.
“We had a chance,” Pierleoni said.
But two unanswered Mustangs’ touchdowns late in the third quarter and the inefficiencies of the Cougars on offense left CHS down 20-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
CHS managed a meager 210 yards of offense in the game.
“It’s tough against a Cover 2 defense like that (to get the ball down field),” Pierleoni said. “When someone does that, you’ve got to be able to run the ball at them inside. For the most part, I think we did OK running the ball. But those mistakes; we would get something going and something would stop our momentum.”
Nic Slater got the Cougars on the board with a 1-yard run, cutting the deficit to two touchdowns with 7:14 to play in the fourth quarter.
However, after a failed onside-kick attempt, the Mustangs countered on the ensuing possession, traveling 53 yards in eight plays and scoring on a 1-yard pass from quarterback Taylor Cohan to tight end Eric Griffen, who caught a created a 38-yard catch and run earlier in the drive.
