May the 4th be with you. That was the theme of the Walk-Bike-Roll event at Las Animas Elementary School May 4. This event is meant to promote an interest in healthy bodies as well as caring for the environment.
Students were encouraged to “Walk, Bike and Roll” to school twice a month. On May the 4th, the theme of the event was Star Wars to coincide with the unofficial galactic movie holiday.
Students dressed in clothing from a galaxy far, far away and received special visitors from the Golden Gate Garrison, 501st Legion, (Lord Vader’s finest troops.) Students who walked, biked and rolled to school came in with a police escort and took photos with the stormtroopers.
All students then gathered for a school wide assembly. Kindergarteners performed songs in English and Spanish. The principal, dressed as Obi Wan Kenobi, spoke about the importance of walking, biking and rolling to school. Even the stormtroopers took a turn speaking to the students about the importance of keeping their bodies healthy “in order to better serve the Empire” and encouraged the students to keep fit.
Students decorated their bike rack in Star Wars theme and wrote “May the Force Be With You” in both English and Spanish.
The event was very well-received by all and the school plans to make it an annual tradition.
