This Thursday, leave the car keys at home, throw the bus fare in a piggy bank and hop on your bike: It’s Bike to Work Day 2006.
The event, part of National Bike Month in May, is an annual recognition of bicycling as a convenient, healthy and fun way to get around.
Here’s how it works: “Energizer stations” are set up in various locations where bike riders can stop by for refreshments, giveaways, information on bicycling and encouragement from fellow participants on their way to work.
In Hollister, commuters who ride their bikes to work Thursday can stop for breakfast from 6:30-9:30am at Briggs Lawn on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. The business with the most employees riding their bikes to work will win a sandwich lunch from Subway for participating employees. To enter, call (831) 637-7665.
If you just can’t wait until Thursday, participate in San Benito County’s Bike to City Council meeting. The meeting is at 7pm today at the San Juan Bautista City Council Chambers, 311 Second St. in San Juan Bautista.
Students who ride their bikes to school May 17 can stop for refreshments before school at Sunnyslope Elementary School, 1475 Memorial Drive in Hollister, or Aromas Elementary School, 365 Vega St. in Aromas, and after school at R.O. Hardin Elementary School, 881 Line St. in Hollister.
A family bike fest will take place from noon-3pm May 20 at Dunne Park, Sixth and West streets. Participants will receive information on bike licensing and helmet safety, bike tune-ups, raffle prizes, music, face painting and more.
In Santa Clara County, “energizer stations” will be set up from 6-9am at the Morgan Hill Caltrain station, located on Butterfield Drive between Main and Diana avenues, and at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17060 Monterey St.
