A formal ground breaking for the Camino Arroyo Bridge will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in front of Costco on Camino Arroyo at Linsteadt Way.

The bridge will connect east Gilroy’s big box stores and shopping outlets, and the first car should drive across in November. There will also be bike lanes and sidewalks in each direction, as well as access to city trails.

HSR General, of Santa Clara, returned the lowest of 10 construction bids at $4.9 million. Together with management costs, utility work and other non-construction expenditures, this last phase will cost about $6.5 million.

This brings the project total to about $9 million. Last summer city officials approved $2.4 million for Galeb Paving, of Saratoga, to do the dirt grading on the north and south sides of Llagas Creek in preparation for the bridge across the waterway. The Valley Transportation Authority has put up $6.7 million.

During the upcoming construction phase, sections of Camino Arroyo to the north will be improved, according to city staff.
