Former Gilroy High School principal Wendy Gudalewicz – who quit in 2002 amid a disagreement over implementing an honors program at GHS – has been appointed as the new superintendent for Cupertino Union School District.
Gudalewicz has 23 years in the education field and before this appointment served as the Chief Academic Officer for the New Haven Unified School District since 2009.
Gudalewicz left GHS after the district announced in summer 2002 its plans to implement a pilot honors program that would have separated some of its ninth-graders among different classes. Revering GUSD’s decision as morally wrong and discriminatory toward low-income or minority students, Gudalewicz resigned.
In 2004, she was appointed principal at Independence High School in San Jose. Gudalewicz resigned one year later after accepting a consulting job outside the district.
Gudalewicz has also served as a superintendent for the Oakland Unified School District and as a site administrator in several school districts in Santa Clara County.
