Former Gilroy superintendent and Gilroy native Edwin Diaz suffered a minor stroke late Thursday night but is “doing fine” and will return to work later this week.
Diaz, 55, currently superintendent of Pasadena Unified School District, recovered from a minor stroke at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena and is expected to return to the district office Thursday before leaving for vacation until Aug. 4, said Diane Orona, Diaz’s assistant.
“I spoke with him this morning and he seemed strong and well-rested,” she said Monday afternoon. “God answered all our prayers.”
About 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Diaz suffered a minor stroke at his home, Orona said. His wife called paramedics immediately, she said. Although Orona has received a few calls inquiring into Diaz’s condition, the district didn’t want to cause “widespread alarm.” Diaz is normally the picture of health, so his stroke puzzled his family and colleagues, Orona said.
According to hospital staff, Diaz had been released by Monday afternoon. He did not return a call to his cell phone.
