A Bay Area conservation group will host a public forum Tuesday to inform residents how development in Gilroy is approved and how community members can get involved in the process.

The event, organized by the Committee for Green Foothills, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Christopher High School library, located at 850 Day Road in Gilroy.

The forum, “Juggling Buildings and Trees,” is open to all Gilroy residents and will cover the following topics:

– How open space in and around Gilroy can be preserved in the future;

– Helping the community better understand the development process and where community input occurs within that process;

– Informing residents how they can participate in the planning of their city.

The forum will be moderated by Leslie Miles of Weston Miles Architects, according to group advocate Julie Hutcheson. Presentations by the City of Gilroy, Arcadia Development Company, the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority and the Committee for Green Foothills are expected.

Though the idea for the event was inspired by the city’s controversial approval of a 71-home development along rolling foothills on Rancho Hills Drive, Hutcheson said the discussion will not focus on that project.
