Dear Editor,
For the last year South County community members have met regularly as a community of the Dolores C. Huerta Foundation to discuss issues of mutual concern and how we can work together to create better lives for ourselves and our families.
One of our five standing committees is education. We are dedicated to providing a quality education to ALL children regardless of background or differences.
We are disturbed about the controversy surrounding the participation of teachers in the Day of Silence. Harassment of students on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation is widespread. The Day of Silence is an effective means of bringing attention to an issue which is often ignored or swept under the rug. There are many methods of teaching tolerance. Silence can be one of them.
We would like to work with the school district to create effective programs for training students, administrators, faculty and staff on diversity issues including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation as well as race, religion, national origin and other differences, so that all students may learn in a safe environment.
It is our hope that enacting such a comprehensive program regarding diversity and tolerance may one day make the need for a Day of Silence unnecessary.
