Sandlot wins B; Just For Fun wins C
GILROY – Sandlot and Just For Fun claimed the B and C Division championships Sunday as the Gilroy Community Services Department presented its 32nd annual Co-Rec Fourth of July Softball Tournament at Christmas Hill Park.
Sandlot emerged with a 5-1 record in the six-team B Division, rallying for three straight wins to capture the double-elimination event.
Just For Fun went 3-0 to the title trophy and T-shirts, winning twice by two runs.
Sandlot began play Saturday with two wins, 12-6 over Alosi Concrete and 24-14 over Century 21 Su Casa. Little Orchard slowed Sandlot with a 13-12 decision Saturday morning. Mike Luevano and Jess Lopez Jr. each ripped four hits for the Orchard. Missy Howe went 5-for-5, Ralphie Martinez 4-for-4 for Sandlot.
Sandlot qualified for the finals with a 5-4 cliffhanger over Century 21 Su Case, needing a Maureen Hughes two-out RBI-single in the eighth inning.
Sandlot followed with two wins over Little Orchard, 11-4 and 15-8. Howe went 3-for-4 in the first contest, Martinez 4-for-4 in the nightcap.
Alosi Concrete settled for fourth place with a 13-12 loss to Century 21 Su Casa. Andrew Ornelas went 4-for-4 for the Realtors. Ruben Ramirez doubled and tripled for Alosi Concrete.
Just For Fun completed the unbeaten two-day affair with a 10-8 squeaker over Jus Cuz in the title game Saturday afternoon at the Christmas Hill Ranch Site.
Just For Fun snapped a 7-7 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cathy Zuniga’s sacrifice fly made it 8-7. Singles by Jose Romero and Amanda Perez made it 9-7, followed by a Ruben Martinez sacrifice fly.
Tracy Sustaita went 4-for-4 and Greg Lucio, Marie Lucio and Martinez fashioned three hits each for the Fun bunch. Steve Lemberger went 3-for-4 for Jus Cuz.
Jus For Fun moved into the finals with an 8-2 nod over Summer Fun. Greg Lucio Jr. went 4-for-4 and scored three Fun runs.
Jus Cuz earned the finals berth with an 8-5 win over Going Postal. Andy Watt paced Jus Cuz with three singles.
Jose Melendrez Jr. hit four extra-base hits and Gino Martinez went 4-for-4 as Summer Fun took third place with a 14-8 verdict over Going Postal.
Kutz and Colors Hair Salon won three games Saturday to capture the consolation crown in the C Division. Cody Wilson went 4-for-4 with four RBI and Junior Gutierrez homered for Kutz and Colors.
Cosa Nostra moved to 2-0 atop the Men’s DD League with a 15-5 victory over Los Chilotes Thursday at Christmas Hill.
Daniel Garcia, Raul Avila and Lupe Lemus each went 3-for-4 for Cosa Nostra. Joel Gaeta went 3-for-3 for Los Chilotes.
Scott Rader and Steve Aguirre each homered as 2-0 Aladdin Bail Bonds-Rhino Wiring topped the Slammers 22-2. Al Kester went 2-for-2 for the Slammers.
The Bomb Squad shook off a 9-0 deficit in the first inning to outlast the Hustlers 18-13. Eddie Adame and Isaiah Gonzalez hit Bomb homers. Eddie Mancini went 4-for-5 for the Hustlers.
