Francisca Varela Olivares, of Gilroy, died Oct. 9, 2002, at
Saint Louise Regional Hospital at age 87. Francisca was born in
Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, and moved to Crystal City, Texas, coming
to Gilroy in 1951.

Francisca belonged to the Guadalupanas, Saint Mary Parish, and the Gilroy Senior Citizens. She was an avid gardener; loved sewing and family gatherings; and enjoyed singing and monthly trips to Reno. As a member of Saint Mary’s Parish for over 50 years, she was in the choir and a solist. She worked at Filice and Perelli Cannery for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonso T. Olivares and son, Arturo V. Olivares. She is survived by her children, Alonso Olivares and wife Lolita of Las Vegas, Nev.; Rudy Olivares of Gilroy; Grace Huebner and husband Jim of Pleasanton; Humberto Olivares of Gilroy; Ernesto Olivares and wife Lucy of Gilroy; and Mary Olivares of San Francisco. She will be dearly missed by all, including her 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, Oct. 12 at Saint Mary’s Church in Gilroy. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
