Tablas helps GHS girls golf to tourney win
SALINAS – The Lady Mustang golf team’s return to Twin Creeks Golf Course in Salinas brought out the best in freshman Rowena Tablas – who registered a 42 over nine holes to help her teammates to Tuesday’s tournament win.

“We squeeked one by this week. There was a big showing by our freshman Rowena Tablas. She played great in her first match,” head coach Eric Kuwada said. “Scoring a 42 was huge in helping win this tournament. It saved us eight strokes and vaulted us past Salinas.

With the rest of the Lady Mustang linkers at the clubhouse, Tablas was the last in and she didn’t let anyone down – tying senior Andrea Hugo for the team’s third best score for a 160 team tally ahead of host Salinas with a 162.

“She was to the last to come in and we were all trying to predict what she would shoot, being her first match and all,” said Kuwada of his freshman. “Shooting 42 was a big lift for us, we wouldn’t have won without it.”

Sophomore stroker Kristen Campos finished with a team-low 37 as junior teammate Amy Kishimura followed with a solid 39 round. Junior Carissa Filice and senior Heather Peterson rounded out the Gilroy line-up with 50s. In high school golf, each team’s top four scores count towards the final result.

“Rowena is one of four freshmen that came out this year. She played her way on to the team yesterday in a qualifier in the heat of Monday,” Kuwada said. “So her game has come a long ways from four weeks ago. It’s so great to see improvement each and every week these girls play.”

Hollister placed third with a 170 total followed by Live Oak with a 179 and Alvarez with a 185.

The Lady Mustangs being their one-on-one format against the southern section of their league – opening next Tuesday against Monta Vista Christian, the defending T-CAL Champs, at Gilroy Golf Course.
