Many students suffer through a long learning curve when they are introduced to golf because they use their right arm to hit the ball. This is natural since most of us are right-handed and we are used to throwing, pushing and doing just about everything with the right side.

When playing golf, we must put our body into front wheel drive. What I mean is the side that is facing the target, which is generally your left side, controls the swing.

We must pull with the left shoulder and upper left arm into the ball on the downswing. Don’t push with the right arm. Pushing with the right arm is a sure way to hit the ball on the inside of the club and the ball goes nowhere.

One way to help put more control in the front side is when you grip the club with your right hand, put the grip between your first and second fingers. This takes a lot of control away from the left and you must then allow the left side to lead the swing.

Feel the pressure of your grip. If your right hand is on so tight that you would break an egg, then loosen it up. If you keep the pressure light, then the left will be in control.

Remember, when all else fails, take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
