The Sporting News reports that sources say Garcia, who was officially released by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, is in “preliminary talks” with the Detroit Lions.

According to TSN, the Lions will tell all free agents that Joey Harrington is the team’s starting quarterback. While Harrington could conceivably lose his job during the preseason, that means Detroit would likely only accept candidates willing to accept a backup role.

Garcia’s agent, Steve Baker, wouldn’t confirm or deny whether he had been in contact with the Lions on Tuesday, TSN reported.

Garcia went to three consecutive Pro Bowls under Detroit head coach Mariucci (2000-2002), but had a miserable year with the Browns as a high-priced free agent last season.

Other quarterbacks the Lions are considering for the backup position include Brad Johnson and Jon Kitna, TSN reported.

And then there’s option number two. Garcia could re-enter the quarterback picture in Tampa Bay and possibly land the starting job.

Garcia, who paid his own way to Tampa for an interview with Bucs coach Jon Gruden last spring, has not lost his desire to play for the Bucs, an NFL source told the Tampa Tribune on Tuesday.
