The Gavilan College softball team had a chance to take sole possession of third place in the Coast Conference South on Thursday afternoon.
However, visiting Hartnell had the same goal in mind and walked away winners 4-1.
“It puts us another game back, but we have three games left,” Gavilan manager Nikki Dequin said. “I told the girls that it could come down to the last game of the season, so we just need to play well the next three games.”
The Rams at 7-7 are jockeying for one of the top-two spots in the conference, which comes with it a trip to the playoffs.
Hartnell tallied in the top of the first. The Rams were able to counter with a run in their half. However, the Panthers scored twice more in the second and again in the third to take the 4-1 lead.
Gavilan had runners on second and third with one out on two occasions but couldn’t push across the runs.
“We put the ball in play but they weren’t dropping for us,” Dequin said. “It’s kind of a tough one.”
