The Gilroy Gardening Group held its annual plant sale April 19 at the Miller Red Barn in Christmas Hill Park. Now in its fourth year, the event featured thousands of organic plant starts for $5 each, including heirloom tomatoes, Asian vegetables, rare peppers and a diverse selection of annual flowers—all grown by the group’s members in their home gardens.

“This is our fourth year,” said Mary Lou Mazzone, board director and volunteer coordinator for the Gilroy Gardening Group. “The president of our organization, Rich Yamashida, started the group during the pandemic, and it grew into this very large community. We have about 45 people who grow a lot of our produce from seed, organic, using good soil.”

New additions to this year’s event included a professional speakers’ series featuring presentations on grape vine cultivation, landscape design and organic fertilizers.

“There are a lot of people who actually grow all of their own vegetables, so people come and get them here because they know we grew them ourselves,” Mazzone said. “The city gives away the soil (and) the compost, and they also give away mulch.”

The Gilroy Gardening Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, donates proceeds from the event to various community organizations including the Miller Red Barn Association, Operation Freedom Paws and local school gardening programs. In addition to operating their annual Spring Plant Sale, the group facilitates knowledge sharing of gardening techniques as well as plant and seed exchange between its members.

  1. Google pay 500$ per hour my last pay check was $19840 working 10 hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 22k for months now and he works about 24 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
