Police arrested a Gavilan College football player for domestic violence, but the first-string running back’s eligibility likely won’t be affected for next year’s season.
Gilroyan Sean Hale, 18, punched an ex-girlfriend in the face several times about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.
“His new girlfriend started to fight, with his ex-girlfriend,” Sgt. Jim Gillio said.
The two girls bickered verbally and one challenged the other to fight but their argument did not come to blows until Hale became involved, Gillio said.
“Gillio did not know who called police but said the victim, Hale and his current girlfriend were at a common friend’s house on the zero block of Crawford Drive, where police arrested Hale for misdemeanor domestic violence.
The freshman football player made All-Conference as a student athlete this year, said Gavilan’s football coach, John Lango. Hale’s alleged violations will not affect his eligibility to play football next year, Gavilan spokeswoman Jan Bernstein Chargin said. Assembly Bill 2165, passed into law in 2006, prohibits any student at a California-funded university or community college from participating in an athletic team if he or she is convicted of serious felonies.
“It is an unfortunate situation for the individuals and families involved,” Athletic Director Ron Hannon said. “At this point we consider it a personal matter.”
