Spaces open in Gavilan's Child Development Center

Gavilan College announced yesterday it will be staffing a Veterans Resource Center as a pilot project for spring semester, in hopes the center will become a one-stop shop for student veteran resources and services.

The VRC is staffed by student veterans, whose goal is to provide fellowship, mentoring for success and helping other veterans find out about services that Gavilan offers. The VCR is located in Theater 128 on the Gavilan Campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

“Nearly two million veterans will be eligible for postsecondary education, courtesy of the post-9/11 GI Bill. As the Iraq war comes to an end and the military draw down continues, it is expected that California community colleges will see a significant rise in veteran enrollment,” said Fran Lopez, Associate Dean of Disability Resources at Gavilan. “In preparation, our vision is to establish a permanent Veterans Resource Center at Gavilan College that responds to the unique needs of veterans as they transition from military to civilian culture and academic life.”

Gavilan’s commitment is to create a “veteran-friendly campus where veterans can establish a sense of camaraderie, access specialized services, mentors and tutors that are primarily other veterans, as sources of assistance and support,” Lopez said.
