GILROY – Searching for momentum with its five-game Coast Conference schedule looming in two weeks, the Gavilan College Rams will travel to San Pablo Saturday for a date with the Contra Costa Comets. Kick-off is 1 p.m.

“We’ve had a good week of practice,” said Rams head coach John Lango, whose team is 0-3 this year. “We’re a little banged up and the flu’s been going around, but we should be OK by Saturday.”

While the Rams have mustered just 30 points in three games, Contra Costa posted 41 points in last weekend’s loss to De Anza.

“Contra Costa had some big plays, including a kick-off return and a fumble recovery for touchdowns,” Lango said. “They can be explosive because they are big up front and their quarterback scrambles a lot. We’re not an explosive team, but I think we can run on them.”

In seven games against the Comets, Gavilan has won only twice, although the Rams easily handled Contra Costa 21-0 last season.

The Comets are 0-4 in pre-Bay Valley Conference action, including losses to Coast Conference members Hartnell (34-16) and De Anza (68-41).

Quarterback Don Miguel Tutass has thrown for 839 yards and five touchdowns on 68 of 122 passing for head coach Dave Johnson’s Comets. Michael Hicks is the top receiver, with 18 catches for 224 yards and two scores.

Contra Costa’s struggling ground game is led by Erick McDaniel, whose 34 rushes this season have netted just 79 yards and one score.

The Rams, meanwhile, have produced 933 yards in three losses. Andrew Gayles (128 yards) and Sean Hale (122 yards and one touchdown) are the primary rushers. Sophomore quarterback Mike Incardona has thrown for 620 yards and three touchdowns on 51 of 99 passing.

Sophomore wideouts Timothy Harvey (17 receptions for 284 yards) and Victor Sapp (10 receptions for 118 yards) make the Rams a veteran passing unit.
