The Gavilan baseball picked up its first win of the season, beating Lassen College 9-6 Thursday behind the bat of Sean Allen.Â
Allen went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and a double for the Rams in their first of three games against the Cougars.
Gavilan didn’t allow Lassen a run until the top of the seventh. The Rams led 9-1 at that point. The Cougars added five runs in the top of the ninth, but their rally fell short.Â
The Rams put up a three-spot in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. John Forestieri tripled to bring home Tony Amaral and scored on the next play off an Erik Barron double. Allen picked up his first RBI of the day when he singled to score Barron.Â
Gavilan added another run in the bottom of the third when DJ Santellano reached on a fielder’s choice and Allen scored. It widened it’s lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Allen doubled, scoring Matt Oxner, Barron and Forestieri.
Lassen gave the Rams two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when it allowed Amaral to score on a wild pitch. Foresteri, who singled and advanced to third on two more wild pitches, came home when Oxner was walked, giving the Rams a 9-0 lead.
Foresteri was a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs, an RBI, a triple and a walk in the game. Barron was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Amaral went 2 for 5 with two runs.Â
Oxner is 1-0 on the season, pitching six innings where he allowed seven hits, but struck out seven. John Angel pitched two and a third innings and allowed three runs on four hits and struck out one. Connor Starke went two thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits, though only one was earned.Â
Lassen’s Jarrell Cunningham was handed the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits while striking out three through three innings.Â
The 1-1 Rams will host Lassen at 2 p.m. today and will wrap-up the series at 11 a.m. Saturday at home.Â
