the 13 goals set by the board
Gilroy – Even government entities make New Year’s resolutions.

Losing weight didn’t make the list, but the Gavilan College Board of Trustees still managed to approve a set of 13 goals for the 2006 school year at a recent meeting. Gavilan administrators will use the board’s goals as guidance throughout the new year.

The following are the Gavilan College goals:

– Establish policy direction ensuring that Gavilan will continue to pursue efforts to provide services to more members within the community college district.

– Explore major initiatives that may be of interest to individual board members and considered important to board member constituents.

– Board members need to promote the college throughout involvement in community functions and activities.

– Develop and distribute a report to the community that details Gavilan’s mission, its general strategy and what it does to effectively and efficiently use public resources.

– Encourage and support changes that will bring more students to Gavilan, such as: continuing to develop an occupational program institute; look at scheduling changes; update technology; renovate facilities and work to attract more students planning to transfer to four-year universities.

– Improve overall appearance of the campus, particularly focusing on reducing weeds and trash.

– Develop a long-range budget strategy.

– Provide more direction on land-use analyses, enabling the college to make the best use of Gilroy property.

– Provide direction on establishments of sites in Coyote Valley and San Benito County.

– Schedule the campus-wide renovation projects so that there are minimal interruptions while school is in session.

– Become more involved in state and local activities.

– Expand Gavilan’s educational role by becoming a vital force in the development of the community by implementing changes such as hiring a full-time faculty member for the music program.

– Develop fee-based education training programs for businesses, thus establishing Gavilan as a training provider to help improve the local workforce and establish partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce to promote the college and advance the overall level of serve provided to local businesses.

Now, the question is, will the college fulfill its resolution?

Only time will tell.
