San Bruno – Playing in the Skyline Tournament in San Bruno this past Saturday, the Gavilan Rams women’s volleyball team lost its first match to the host school 25-30, 26-30, 20-30.
“Skyline played pretty well, but the biggest impact on the match was (our) 43 unforced errors,” Gavilan Coach Kevin Kramer said by email. “We racked up a combined 30 serving errors and hitting errors alone.”
The match included subplots as two of the starters for Skyline were players who played for Kramer last year at Cañada College. The team’s setter was a player Kramer recruited and would have been the setter for Canada this year.
“There is a potential rematch in the works for later in the year at our place, so if it happens, it will be a great chance for us to redeem ourselves,” Kramer said.
For the Rams, Jamie Temperino, Teresa Hodges, and Barbie Csore combined for 29 kills in the loss while Janet Unciano had 31 assists.
In the second match, Gavilan easily defeated College of Alameda 30-17, 30-21, 30-11. Serving was the key to the win with Gavilan hitting 10 aces in the match and keeping Alameda’s offense from ever getting on track. Sharleen Rojas led the Rams with 5 Kills and Unciano and Jamie Skocko combined for 16 assists. Amanda Ross led the defense with 7 digs.
Gavilan’s overall record is 3-3 heading into Wednesday night’s conference opener against Hartnell College at 6pm at the Gavilan gym.
