Tara Clark (L) and Alyssa Aragon (R) with their medals

The Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA) Academic Decathlon Team took home two medals from the State Competition in Sacramento held earlier this month.

The nine students on the team battled students from other schools in 10 events. Over the course of five days – from March 14-18 – the GECA team competed in multiple-choice exams, speech contests, interviews and an essay competition.

The culmination of the academic decathlon was a Jeopardy-style “Super Quiz” about Russia. To prepare for the quiz, students studied everything from traditional Russian folk music to the space race, said Mary Ann Boylan, principal at GECA.

The team placed first in Santa Clara County, which boosted them in qualifying and got them to the state level.

At the state competition, GECA students Tara Clark won the bronze in Interview and Alyssa Aragon earned silver in the same event.

The team members from the GECA are:

Fernando Lopez

Shelby Wallace

Richard Carini

Jessica Cabatingan

Tara Clark

Evan Hickerson

Alyssa Aragon

Jeremy Lohman

Logan Tobey
