Facing a steep obstacle in a Del Campo-Fair Oaks backcourt that included a 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-3 players, the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team suffered a loss in its opening round game of the annual Seaside Sweet 16 tournament 53-35 on Monday night.

Without its two starting guards they had started the season with – both out with injuries – senior forward Ashlee Williams and sophomore guard Brianna Barron shared the scoring load with 10 points apiece.

Head coach Kort Jensen pointed out the play of Barron and fellow sophomores Holly Lam and Leilana Mah.

“I am very proud of the girls. They played very hard while being very shorthanded,” Jensen said.

The Mustangs (5-3) continue play at the four-day tournament today.
