Lady Mustangs Closing in on League Title
With a 66-43 win over Notre Dame in Salinas Tuesday night, the Gilroy girls basketball team put itself one victory away from at least a share of the Tri-County Athletic League title.

“We were a really good basketball team tonight,” said Gilroy head coach Kari Williams. “We passed the ball so nicely. Notre Dame plays great defense and we just kept making that extra pass and setting good screens. It was a fun game for us.”

Senior forward Katherine Hussey’s 26 points led the Mustangs (20-4, 9-0 TCAL). Seniors Jessica Groppe (14 points) and Kristen Campos (12 points, 2 three-pointers) were also in double-figures for Gilroy.

The Spirits dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-6 in TCAL.

Sophomore Vanessa Wilkins chipped in six points and senior Marissa Nowakowski added five.

Williams was encouraged by her team’s 26-point fourth quarter, much of which was played without floor leader Campos who fouled out with four minutes to play.

“It was a good finish for us,” Williams said. “We didn’t have trouble with the press and still did a lot of scoring after that.”

The Mustangs travel to second-place North Salinas Thursday. The Vikings are 8-1 in TCAL, with their only league loss being a 72-60 loss to the Mustangs. A victory means Gilroy, which as won 10 games in a row, will earn at least a share of the league title
