Gilroy suffered a loss at the hands of a very athletic and quick Valley Christian Wednesday night in San Jose.
“We got down early,” said Gilroy head coach Bud Ogden. “We played them zone and they came out smoking.
After the first few minutes, Gilroy found itself down 10-0. By the end of the first quarter, the ‘Stangs were down 18-8. Gilroy stayed even with the Warriors after that, but couldn’t cut into the lead and lost 55-42.
Sophomore center Jason Conrad led Gilroy with a 12 points and 10 rebounds and Jeremy Teschera added 11. Destry Jones had another quality night off the bench, scoring seven points and pulling down six rebounds.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 4-6 going into today’s Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament.
Valley Christian’s air-tight defense was a big reason the Mustangs were never able to close the gap on the Warriors.
“Their defensive pressure kept us out of a structured offense,” Ogden said. “They pressured you right out of whatever you wanted to do.”
Gilroy plays St. Francis Central Coast Catholic tonight at 8pm in the opening round of the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament.
