Gilroy – Only one group of Mustangs got to ride off into the night with victory Tuesday, and it wasn’t the team from Monte Vista Christian.

Gilroy’s girls varsity volleyball team bounced back after a rough weekend tournament in San Luis Obispo to defeat the Mustangs of MVC 25-15, 25-21, 25-10.

GHS coach Sue Grogan said the team was able to find a silver lining in their final defeat over the weekend, a 23-25 loss to Camarillo.

“They played outstanding in that game,” Grogan said. “They were digging and killing. It was back and forth the whole time.”

The result was a renewed sense of confidence after losing several games prior. A day off on Sunday and practice on Monday made Gilroy’s Mustangs (4-2) a much better prepared squad according to Grogan.

“We had a light practice and they came out ready to play,” she said.

Melissa Avila led the way with seven kills, followed by Katelin Faria and Caitlin Chisolm, who each had six slams.

“We did really good,” Avila said. “We were hustling, we were talking and we didn’t let very many balls drop.”

Lindsay Meazell contributed 11 assists and Loryn Ferreira had six service aces.

Overall the team had 28 kills on 23 assists.

“That just meant we were attacking the ball and there were over passes,” Grogan said. “Some of the girls were having their ups and downs but overall everyone was really playing.”

For a team that is integrating several young players, some of who were on the freshman team last season, Grogan said there will be struggles over the course of the season.

The team’s next game will be the TCAL opener at home against San Benito. The varsity game will begin at 6:30pm with junior varsity playing at 5:30 and the freshman team at 4:30.
