Free tax preparation services

Gilroy – Low income families making less than $38,000 a year are eligible for free tax preparation services and information, and could receive between $412 – $4,536 if eligible for the earned income tax credit. These services are offered at St. Francis Center of Assisi located near First and Church streets Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7:30pm, and at three other locations in San Jose.

Join the Citizen Police Academy

Gilroy – Police are still seeking applicants for the annual Citizen Police Academy, a 10-week course that teaches the A to Z of local law enforcement. Applications are available at the Gilroy Police Department, or can be requested over the phone from Community Service Officer Maribel Gutierrez, who is running the program for the fourth time.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, free of felony convictions, have no misdemeanor arrests in the past year, and live or work within Gilroy’s city limits. Background checks are also run on each applicant. Chief Gregg Giusiana makes the final call as to who gets into the program, which accepts between 20 to 25 students each year. Applications are due Jan. 31.

GAL now accepting grant requests

Gilroy – Last year GAL gave out more than $10,000 to various local youth causes, such as St. Joseph’s Family Center, Rebekah Children’s Home, South Valley Suzuki Music Foundation, Sportsman Chef’s Fishability Day, Bonfante Gardens Education Foundation, and others.

Grant requests should request a specific amount and how the funds will be used. Funds are to be used for children and youth needs and programs.

New classes at Saint Louise

Gilroy – Saint Louise Regional Hospital will be offering new classes this year in Gestational Diabetes and Baby Signing.

Gilroy High School Open House

Gilroy – Gilroy High will hold an open house from 6:15 to 8:30pm, Feb. 6. The GHS choir, band and cheerleaders will perform special presentations.

Desperados present Sweetheart Social

Gilroy – In conjunction with the Gilroy Foundation, the Desperados present their 8th annual Sweetheart Social, Feb. 10 at Coast Range Brewery 7050 Monterey.

Social begins at 6pm, with social time and silent auction until 7:30pm. Dinner and a raffle begin at 7:30pm followed by dancing.

Tickets are $35 per person, ticket price includes: pasta with red sauce, tri tip, salad, garlic bread and complimentary beverages. All proceeds benefit the community and local youth, in memory of Gary Filice.

Gav’s Got Talent

Gilroy – A talent competition will be held at the Gavilan College Theater 6pm, Saturday, Feb. 24. Any Gavilan student or staff with talent from singing, to dancing, performing arts, spoken word and any kind of talent is welcome to compete for cash prizes.

Auditions will be held Feb. 8 and Feb. 14 from 5 to 8pm, in the student center north/south lounge. Tickets are $5 with an ASB card and $7 for the general public.
