Who says the next generation doesn’t know what it means to be dedicated?

While Gilbert Gutierrez was maintaining his 3.7 grade point average at Gilroy High School, the focused young man dedicated himself to the school’s varsity wrestling team – each of his four years at the school.

Wrestling in the 130- to 140-pound weight classes throughout his four years on the varsity squad, Gutierrez culminated his high school career with a team regional championship and a personal league championship in his weight class.

“I’d like to wrestle in college, but Monterey doesn’t have a team there yet,” Gutierrez said. “I’m thinking of starting up a club when I get there and maybe later if enough people join we can make it a school sport and compete in a league.”

It’s no pipe dream. Gutierrez is heading over to Cal State Monterey with fellow wrestling standout Andrew Rauss who also wants to be part of a new grapplers’ club. Gutierrez has experience in running clubs. He served as president of the American Classic Car club at GHS and was dance commissioner this year. Gutierrez will major in health and nutrition next fall in the hopes of one day being a personal trainer or chiropractor. He will also study marine biology since he’ll be “in the perfect location for it.”
