It was like two different matches for Gilroy.

The Mustangs were in control for the first two games, and then succumbed to Alisal’s rally as the Trojans posted a 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-5 win for their second Tri-County Athletic League triumph.

“We were going so well and then we lost one of our powers (Renz Campos, who injured his ankle),” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “We played an incredible first two games and into the third game. They (Trojans) weren’t hitting as hard in the third and fourth games, but they were able to place and top the ball.”

After a fast start, the Mustangs (3-8 overall, 0-2 TCAL) were hurt by a multitude of errors.

“The majority of the time, they outlasted us,” Grogan said. “They waited for us to make mistakes. They kept pushing and pushing. By the fifth game, they pulled ahead and we crumbled.”

Kevin Bruce had nine kills and seven digs. Mike Leininger had eight digs. Greg Calimpong and Alfred Medenceles combined for 22 assists. Sean O’Neill had three service aces, four kills and two blocks, and “was probably our most consistent player,” according to Grogan.

Alisal was led by setter Daniel Rice.

“They pushed the middle a lot and got a good number of kills off quick sets in the middle,” Grogan said. “We were not able to adjust quickly enough to that.”

Gilroy continues TCAL play at 6:30pm Tuesday when it travels to league-favorite Monterey.
