Gilroy’s girls took second and fourth Monday, but host San Benito won the cross country meet 22-39.

Courtney Allen’s 21:55 led the way over the hilly 3-mile Hollister course. The Mustangs’ Kathleen Miller was second in 22:43, Paty Hernandez was fourth in 23:02 and Christine Bobula 10th in 24:48.

The ‘Balers’ boys ran past Gilroy 19-39, paced by Rigo Velasquez’s 17:14. The Mustangs’ Derek Pesta was fourth in 18:22, followed by teammate Jaime Reyes in fifth at 18:40. GHS runners Manuel Cazas (ninth in 19:54) and Agustin Serafino (10th in 20:28) rounded out the top 10.

Pesta finished 13th overall in the Chieftain Invitational on Saturday at Toro Park in 16:59. Casas was 80th in 18:47.

WATER POLO

The Gilroy boys continued their strong early season showing last Tuesday with a 17-8 win over Monterey.

Austin Gubrud led the Mustangs (4-1) with nine goals with Daniel Shields adding four. The Mustangs started strong, leading 6-0 after the first quarter.
